What Is HEIC and Why Convert to JPG?

HEIC (High Efficiency Image Container) is Apple’s default photo format on iPhones and iPads since iOS 11. It uses the HEIF (High Efficiency Image File Format) standard, which produces files roughly 50% smaller than JPG at the same quality. While this is great for saving storage on your Apple device, HEIC files aren’t widely supported outside the Apple ecosystem.

Windows, Android, most web browsers, social media platforms, email clients, and many photo editors cannot open HEIC files directly. Converting to JPG gives you universal compatibility — every device, every app, every website can display a JPG image. TweakFiles converts HEIC to JPG entirely in your browser, so your photos never leave your device.

Why Are My iPhone Photos HEIC?

Starting with iOS 11 and iPhone 7, Apple switched the default camera format from JPG to HEIC to save storage space. A typical iPhone photo as HEIC is around 1–2 MB, while the same photo as JPG would be 3–5 MB. With thousands of photos on your phone, this adds up to significant storage savings.

You can change your iPhone settings to capture in JPG instead (Settings → Camera → Formats → Most Compatible), but this uses more storage. The better approach is to keep shooting in HEIC and convert to JPG only when you need to share with non-Apple users or upload to a service that doesn’t support HEIC.

Common Use Cases

  • Sharing iPhone photos with Windows or Android users
  • Uploading to websites, blogs, or social media that don’t support HEIC
  • Emailing photos to colleagues using non-Apple devices
  • Importing photos into Windows-based photo editors (Photoshop, GIMP, etc.)
  • Printing photos at services that only accept JPG
  • Archiving photos in a universally compatible format
  • Preparing images for web development or design projects

How TweakFiles Conversion Works

TweakFiles uses the heic-to library (powered by libheif 1.21) to decode HEIC files directly in your browser using JavaScript and WebAssembly. The HEIC data is decoded to raw pixel data and then re-encoded as a JPG image at your chosen quality level. The entire process happens client-side — your photos are never uploaded to any server. This makes the conversion completely private and works even without an internet connection after the page has loaded.

How to Convert HEIC to JPG in 3 Steps

1

Upload HEIC Photos

Drag and drop your HEIC files into the drop zone above, or click to browse. You can select multiple files at once for batch conversion. TweakFiles accepts .heic and .heif files from iPhones, iPads, and any other device that uses the HEIF format.

2

Convert to JPG

Adjust the quality slider to control the balance between file size and image quality. At 92% (default), the output is virtually indistinguishable from the original. At lower settings, you get smaller files suitable for web use or email. Click Convert and TweakFiles processes all files in your browser simultaneously.

3

Download Your JPGs

Download individual converted files by clicking the download button next to each one, or use Download All to save everything at once. The filenames keep the original name with the .jpg extension so you can easily find them.

Go to Settings → Camera → Formats and select “Most Compatible”. This switches your camera to JPG. However, this uses roughly twice as much storage per photo. A better approach is to keep shooting in HEIC and convert only when needed.
